This Earth Day, we celebrate a movement too powerful to be buried
The theme this year is our power, our planet. It invites everyone around the world to unite around renewable energy – to triple the global generation by 2030.
Today we celebrate the people who have turned their homes into a generating station. The ones who whisper to me “Guess how much we are exporting to the grid right now – I can show you on my phone!”. Those whose face lights up as they give me a tour of their metering system, battery storage and/or electric car charging infrastructure, perhaps even a heat pump for good measure. Because clean energy feels good.
Today we celebrate everyone who has supported the transition to greener, cleaner power in any way, no matter how small. Renewable energy accounts for over half of our generating capacity in the UK. Green tariffs are cost competitive and an easy switch. On this small windy island, there is much more potential to unlock.
For a safe and liveable future, we must keep fossil fuels where they belong – in the ground. Clean energy is abundant. It is not vulnerable to geopolitics. It doesn’t run out. We are allowed to feel proud of the revolution that has started, the people that have made it happen, and the transformation that is still to come.
In the last ten years;
Solar panel prices have dropped by a whopping 90%
Wind energy generating capacity has tripled globally
Over half of those wind turbines were installed in China
Simply put – don’t waste your time with outdated perspectives. The new book - Climate of Truth, Mike Berners-Smith’s (Author of There is No Planet B) provides an updated and frank account of where we are at, and what we need to do next.
Happy Earth Day!
